What is Borrowed Intelligence?
Borrowed intelligence is the practice of using the services, assistance, knowledge, judgment, or capability of a third party to extend your own ability to perform a task, solve a problem, or make a decision.
For almost all of human history, intelligence was one of the world’s most valuable and strictly limited resources. Those who possessed it enjoyed opportunities unavailable to anyone else: better decisions, greater influence, specialized professions, and positions of authority. Access was heavily guarded—shaped by wealth, education, geography, or social status—making it a resource that was both profoundly valuable and unevenly distributed.
Importantly, intelligence could not simply be acquired on demand.
It could not be downloaded.
It had to be earned.
Even an enthusiastic amateur researching a subject had to invest time and effort before reaching a basic level of understanding. For professionals, the investment was an order of magnitude greater:
- Years of study.
- Years of experience.
- Years of mistakes.
- Years of observation.

Now, for the first time in history, an individual can instantly access an extraordinary body of borrowed intelligence without undertaking the journey that traditionally produced the wisdom required to use it well.
That is an extraordinary achievement.
It is also one of the largest social experiments humanity has ever conducted.
Throughout history, knowledge, judgment, and experience arrived together. The years spent learning a profession were not just about accumulating information; they were about developing discipline, learning from failure, recognising patterns, and understanding when knowledge should—and should not—be applied.

Artificial intelligence isn’t waiting for people to seek it out. It has been quietly embedded into our phones, customer service channels, workplaces, and everyday software. As organisations aggressively embrace AI, the workforce is expected to keep pace.
If society is actively encouraging billions of people to adopt one of the most powerful cognitive tools ever created, then society—and the technology companies driving this shift—must accept a parallel responsibility.
Their job cannot simply be to market it. It must be to educate people on how to co-exist with it.
Most of us have heard stories of drivers who blindly followed their satellite navigation systems and steered directly off a cliff. Borrowed intelligence presents the exact same risk.
Only this time, the cliff edge is completely invisible.
The user remains responsible for where they drive. But we can no longer ignore the responsibility of those placing the keys to borrowed intelligence into the hands of everyone, everywhere. If we mandate widespread adoption without fostering widespread understanding, we have no right to be surprised when the consequences begin to arrive.
