A Note to the Reader

Every generation believes it understands progress. This investigation asks what progress actually changed.

Has life actually become better?

Parents tell their children that life used to be simpler. Children reply that life has never been safer, healthier or more technologically advanced. Economists point towards rising GDP. Politicians celebrate employment, wages and productivity. Technology companies promise a future of ever-increasing convenience.

Each presents evidence. Each tells part of the story. Yet none answers the question that quietly sits beneath them all: has life actually become better?

Life expectancy has risen dramatically. Child mortality has fallen. Medical science now cures diseases that were once fatal. Technology has removed countless hours of physical labour from everyday life. Measured this way, the conclusion appears obvious: progress has won.

And yet another story exists alongside it. Anxiety has become a defining feature of modern life. Loneliness persists despite unprecedented connectivity. Communities have weakened in many places. Housing has become less attainable for many younger adults. The same technologies that save time increasingly compete for attention.

A human measure of progress

Traditional indicators remain valuable, but none attempts to measure the experience of living through a particular moment in history.

The Post-Social Human Condition Framework was developed to examine a question beyond economics: how effectively did a society support an ordinary person's opportunity to build a good life?

Across the following chapters, six moments in modern Britain are assessed using the same framework: 1930, 1950, 1970, 1990, 2010 and 2025. No decade receives credit for inventions that had not yet been made. Each is judged by the opportunities, constraints and expectations that existed at that time.

This investigation is not nostalgic. No generation lived in a golden age. Every era contained hardship and opportunity. The question is not which generation was universally better. It is what progress actually changed.

Why This Investigation Exists

Economic measures describe output with precision, but reveal far less about the lived experience of ordinary people.

Beyond economic performance

Modern society measures inflation, productivity, employment, GDP, interest rates and public debt with extraordinary precision. Yet these measures tell us remarkably little about what everyday life actually felt like for the people living through them.

A country can become wealthier while its citizens become more anxious. Technology can remove physical effort while demanding increasing attention. Healthcare can improve while loneliness rises. Human life is multidimensional.

The PHCF therefore asks a different question: how effectively did a society enable an ordinary thirty-year-old to build a good life?

It examines Survival, Home, Work & Finance, Education, Agency, Relationships, Community, Time, Technology and Wellbeing. Three supporting indices add context: Lifestyle Expectation, Friction Reduction and Comparison Horizon.

Every score can be challenged. Every assumption can be debated. The purpose is not to defend a conclusion, but to improve our understanding of progress.

The Post-Social Human Condition Framework

A multidimensional assessment of lived experience, designed to compare eras without confusing capability with human outcome.

The Human Condition Fingerprint

The Human Condition Score is derived from ten structural dimensions: Survival, Home, Work & Finance, Education, Agency, Relationships, Community, Time, Technology and Wellbeing.

The Lifestyle Expectation Index measures what people considered a normal or acceptable standard of living within their own era. It explains why objective improvements do not always produce greater satisfaction.

The Friction Reduction Index measures how much unnecessary effort technology, infrastructure and systems removed from everyday life.

Comparison Horizon measures the breadth of the people against whom individuals compare themselves. In 1930 this was largely local. By 2025 it had become global and algorithmically amplified.

Together, HCS, LEI, FRI and CH form the Human Condition Fingerprint. Scores are provisional, evidence-led and open to revision.

Britain, 1930

Hardship and belonging existed together in a society where everyday life remained physically demanding and comparison remained local.

Life on its own terms

Imagine reaching your thirtieth birthday in Britain during 1930. Coal heats homes, washing clothes consumes hours, travel is slow and dangerous occupations remain common. Financial security often depends upon remaining healthy enough to work.

Measured by modern standards, the era appears harsh. Life expectancy is lower, infectious disease remains a genuine threat and opportunities are strongly influenced by class, geography and gender.

Yet expectations are comparatively modest. Family networks are often geographically close, neighbourhood identity is strong and participation in local organisations remains common. Community is not a lifestyle choice; it is part of everyday life.

The defining lesson is that hardship and belonging existed together. The purpose is not to romanticise the period, but to show that convenience alone cannot explain the Human Condition.

Britain, 1950

A nation rebuilding through institutions, optimism and a widening belief that ordinary lives could improve.

Reconstruction as progress

Britain in 1950 was rebuilding itself five years after the Second World War. Rationing continued, housing shortages persisted and many industries remained physically demanding.

The creation of the National Health Service transformed access to healthcare. Education expanded, social housing programmes accelerated and reconstruction created a belief that each generation could expect a better future.

Domestic technology had only begun reducing everyday friction, but the foundations of modern Britain were being established. Families generally lived closer together and neighbourhood identity remained strong.

Britain in 1950 demonstrates that progress is often built through institutions rather than inventions.

Britain, 1970

Convenience and community briefly advanced together as domestic technology entered ordinary life.

The convenience threshold

By 1970, refrigerators, washing machines, televisions and private cars were becoming ordinary features of everyday life rather than symbols of exceptional wealth.

Daily life required less physical effort. Healthcare improved, educational opportunities expanded and technology began changing routines rather than simply supporting industry.

Inflation, industrial unrest, power shortages and Cold War tension placed pressure on households. Even so, expectations had not yet accelerated to modern levels and comparison remained largely national.

The defining lesson is that convenience and community briefly advanced together: modern enough to benefit from progress, yet still rooted in local relationships and largely offline lives.

Britain, 1990

The provisional peak: mature structural progress before permanent digital connectivity became an environment.

The balance hypothesis

The PHCF identifies 1990 as the strongest overall balance of structural progress and everyday human experience within the period examined. This is a provisional conclusion and the central hypothesis of the investigation.

Britain possessed mature healthcare, expanding higher education, comparatively affordable home ownership for many households, improving workplace safety and widespread consumer technology.

The average thirty-year-old could benefit from modern medicine and household technology without carrying a smartphone, without social media and without an algorithm competing continuously for attention. Home remained psychologically separate from work.

The era was not perfect. Regional inequality, industrial decline, high interest rates and uneven opportunity remained. Its defining characteristic was balance: technology remained a tool rather than an environment.

Britain, 2010

Technology stopped being somewhere people visited and became a continuous environment carried in every pocket.

The connectivity turning point

By 2010, smartphones, broadband and social media transformed communication, work, entertainment and information into continuous experiences.

Healthcare advanced, educational access widened and technology removed more friction than at any previous point. Banking, shopping, navigation, photography and communication converged into a single device.

For the first time, technological progress and the Human Condition no longer rose together. Friction continued falling while lifestyle expectations declined as comparison became global, continuous and curated.

The defining characteristic of 2010 is the transition from technology as a tool to technology as an environment.

Britain, 2025

Unprecedented capability combined with a psychological landscape shaped by permanent comparison, housing pressure and algorithmic attention.

Capability and contentment

By 2025, artificial intelligence entered everyday life, smartphones became universal and almost every service could be accessed digitally. From a structural perspective, many aspects of life had never been stronger.

Yet housing affordability became a defining challenge for many younger adults. Constant connectivity blurred the boundary between work and personal life. Social comparison became a permanent feature of daily existence, amplified by systems designed to maximise attention.

Artificial intelligence accelerated the transition from technology helping people perform tasks to technology generating content, organising information and participating in decisions.

The defining lesson is that capability and contentment are not the same thing. Future progress should ask how technological capability can strengthen the lived experience of being human.

Comparative Analysis

Across a century, structural progress rose steadily while expectations, comparison and community moved in different directions.

What the century reveals

Survival improved through medicine, sanitation and workplace safety. Education expanded, technology removed increasing amounts of friction and opportunities widened.

At the same time, lifestyle expectations rose, the comparison horizon expanded from local communities to algorithmically curated global networks and community cohesion weakened in many places.

Progress is neither wholly linear nor wholly cyclical. Different dimensions improve at different speeds, producing periods where objective conditions advance while lived experience becomes more complex.

1990 currently leads because structural progress had matured while permanent digital comparison had not yet become embedded within everyday life. The conclusion remains provisional.

Methodology and Conclusions

What the framework measures, what it does not claim, and why every score must remain open to revision.

A Version One framework

The PHCF combines structural and experiential measures while keeping explanatory indices separate from the Human Condition Score.

Every era is assessed independently using the same framework. Earlier generations are not penalised for technologies that had not yet been invented, and modern society is not rewarded simply for possessing advanced capability.

The framework concludes that progress is multidimensional. Medical science, education, safety and technology advanced, while rising expectations, expanding comparison and declining cohesion introduced new psychological complexity.

This edition is Version One. Its success does not depend on every score proving correct. It depends on encouraging a better question: how should we measure a life well lived?

Future Research and the Road Ahead

The framework is intended to begin an investigation, not close one.

A living research programme

Every score should be regarded as provisional, evidence-led and open to revision as better historical research and data become available.

Future editions should publish complete scoring rubrics, expand evidence-confidence ratings, introduce sensitivity testing and refine dimension weighting.

International comparisons, regional assessments and analysis of major historical shocks could reveal how societies with similar economic performance produce different human outcomes.

Future scenario modelling may examine artificial intelligence, automation and demographic change. These should be presented as scenarios rather than historical assessments, with explicit confidence ratings.

The long-term ambition is to help society discuss progress in more human terms. The Human Condition is not fixed. Neither should be the framework that seeks to understand it.

Our task is not to romanticise the past or fear the future. It is to understand the trade-offs, protect what matters, and design a future where human potential can flourish.
